Get something off your chest

My experience doing the pop-up newsroom was very insightful to the campus community. As a student who doesn’t like stopping on her way to the next stop, I can’t blame the students who didn’t want to chat. For me, this experience highlighted how our school is commuter-heavy and isn’t as social compared to others; everyone that’s here has something to do or somewhere to go.

It also helped to think about stories I can look into. Some of my ideas include; asking university officials like ASI who run welcome week on how they can work to make campus more social or talking to student government and getting their point of view on campus student engagement especially with the USU being under renovations. The USU brought students together and gave them a space to be able to meet, hang out and create relationships. How do we replace that for campus for the next few years?

I’m also not the biggest fan of group projects, but Natalia, Ian and Cameron were great partners and made something that can be intimidating much more comfortable. As a student journalist, I’ve struggled a lot when it comes to approaching people, I’m much more comfortable interviewing when I’ve scheduled the interview. It was great to have an activity like this where I have to challenge myself. I had a really great experience and would do it again!

Also something I enjoyed from the other groups was the use of multimedia, specifically Maizi, Elijah, Lyrissa and Tyler’s group. I think sometimes people become more engaging when it comes to being filmed for these vertical videos, especially with how much they’re trending lately. I also think while we had a good phrase, “get something off your chest,” maybe next time doing a question instead can bring more people in.
